Valvular heart disease is a condition in which the heart valves are inflamed or damaged. There are several types of valvular disease in which, Valvular stenosis and Valvular insufficiency are the main two types. Stenosis occurs if the size of the valve is smaller than the normal. This narrowed opening put extra pressure for heart to pump blood. This leads to heart failure.

Valvular insufficiency is another symptom in which valve leakage occurs. This condition is also called as Regurgitation. This is due to the inability of the valve to close tightly. If the valve does not close properly then it will lead to back flow of blood.

Valve’s disease can develop before birth or acquired during one’s life time. Congenital valve disease which affects mostly aortic or pulmonic valve. The valves may be in wrong size or malformed which leads to valvular disease. Rheumatic fever which leads to inflammation of the valves causes leakage in valves. When bacteria enter the blood stream it is circulated in blood and leads to development of holes in the valves which cause leakage of blood.

Difficulty in breathing, weakness, dizziness, chest discomfort, palpitation, swelling of the ankles, feet, abdomen and rapid increase in weight are some of the symptoms of valvular disease. Disease is diagnosed by performing physical examination and conducting other test. The physical exam include echocardiography, transesophageal echocardiography, angiogram, MRI scan etc.

The treatment depends on the type of valve affected and the severity of the disease condition. The aim of the treatment is to protect the valve from further damage, reducing the symptoms and repairing or replacing the affected vein. Medicines are prescribed to treat the damage. Some medicines are stopped after surgery and some medicines are continued for life long. Surgeries are done to repair or replace the affected or damaged vein.
