Sildenafil Citrate -Multiple System Atrophy And Erectile Dysfunction

Multiple system atrophy (MSA) is a neurological disease characterized by degeneration.  This is accompanied by several conditions like Parkinsonism, dysfunction of the cerebellum, and interference in the autonomic processes.

It is associated with destruction of nerve cells in specific area of the brain resulting in problems with movement, balance and autonomic functions of the body such as bladder control. About 55 percent of cases occur in men between the age group of 50 to early 60’s.  The cause of the MSA is unknown and there is no specific risk factor has been identified so far.

Urinary and erectile dysfunction was the common symptoms present in the initial stage of multiple system atrophy in men. Improper functioning of the Autonomic nerves is in part related to erectile function.  Ideally, this expresses itself initially as orthostatic hypotension (OH). It was studied that the occurrence of MSA affects the dopamine which interrupts the cycle of events occurring during erection resulting in erectile dysfunction.

The physiology of the male has to get some kind of nerve impulses in the brain, spinal cord and penis in the right order to produce a normal erection. Since MSA affects the nerve cells in the brain, it leads to poor message carried from brain, spinal cord to the penis and reduce the supply of blood flow to the penis. This condition leads to improper erection.  

Parkinsonism is the key identification for multiple system atrophy. The classic symptom of parkinson’s disease include tremor, kind of rigidity, slow movement and instability in maintaining posture, in which the first two symptoms leads to physical pain that makes sex painful or uncomfortable resulting in poor erection. There is low level of dopamine is noted in PD which is also responsible for lessened drive or interest in sex.

There is no treatment to stop or slow the degeneration of brain cells in MSA; however, related male ED may be treated with Sildenafil Citrate or other medications.
