Hypertension or High Blood Pressure is a condition in which there is a high pressure or tension in the arteries. Arteries carry blood from the heart to various tissues and organs of the body. The normal blood pressure is below 120/80, blood pressure between 120/80 to 139/89 is called “pre-hypertension” and a blood pressure of 140/90 or above is considered as high.

Blood pressure is measured by two numbers called as systolic pressure which is generated when the heart contracts. Systolic represents the large number.  Diastolic pressure which is represented by small number and this pressure are due to pressure in the arteries while heart is filling and resting between heartbeats. Almost 10 percent of people suffer from high blood pressure due to some other problem, the condition is termed as secondary hypertension. Chronic kidney disease, tumors or diseases of the adrenal gland, contraction of the aorta, pregnancy, use of birth control pills, thyroid disorders etc are some of the causes of secondary hypertension.

Smoking is one of the major risk factor in those with hypertension.  Hypertension also plays a role in inducing erectile dysfunction in men warranting treatment with drugs like Viagra, Cialis or Levitra. Though smoking does not do anything directly to erectile dysfunction it increases the risk factor for hypertension induced erectile dysfunction.

The symptoms are usually mild and non specific i.e. vague or suggesting many different disorders and hence hypertension is referred as silent killer. Headache, dizziness, blurred vision, nausea etc are symptoms associated with hypertension. Few organs are damaged in chronic high blood pressure which include heart attack, failure of heart, stroke, kidney failure, loss of vision due to eye damage etc.

High blood pressure is treated in many conditions by doing significant change in life style such as weight loss and exercise but in most cases medicines are prescribed. Eating a nutritious and low fat diet, doing regular exercise, decreased salt intake especially sodium restriction, limiting alcohol, quit smoking, checking blood pressure periodically, reduced stress level and maintaining healthy weight etc are some of the preventive measures of hypertension.
